About Pathos X

What does Pathos X mean?

Pathos X stands for pathos spectrum.

What's that?

Here's the definition of pathos:

Pathos (noun):

[Greek: πάθος (pathos), from πάσχω (pascho) - 'experience' or 'emotion']

The quality or power in an experience, work of art, or communication that evokes emotion, compassion, or sorrow in the observer.

Is it a synonym for emotional empathy?

Yes! Exactly.

What about pathos spectrum?

The capacity for emotional empathy forms the core of the human personality, with everything else built upon it.

Rooted in our ability to form attachments, this capability is established during very early childhood.

It exists on a continuum known as the pathos spectrum, reflecting the varying degrees to which people can internalize the emotions of others.

Right, our first relationships act as the model for our subsequent relationships.

Exactly. On one side of the spectrum are other-focused people, who have an acute sensitivity to the feelings and needs of others. As a consequence of this characteristic, they may overlook protecting themselves.

On the opposite side of the continuum are self-focused people, who operate from a defensive stance. They are hard-wired to constantly, continuously, moment by moment, assess their environment for threats, prioritizing self-interest above all else.

In the middle are balanced-focus people, who are able to balance caring for others while also protecting themselves.

Interesting.. this does correspond with my experiences.

Our position on the pathos spectrum is the key determinant of our behavior, driving how we perceive, interpret, and interact with the world and those around us.

Not extroversion
Not agreeableness
Not conscientiousness
Not openness
Not neuroticism

This is all fascinating, but why is it important to me?

Recognizing the capacity for emotional empathy is crucial to understanding an individual's mental model, or "operating system". Emotional empathy acts as an internal restraint system - a built-in govenor of behavior. Those without this internal restraint can choose to behave prosocially, but they don't have a built-in aversion to dissocial behavior.

Detecting the capacity (or lack of capacity) for emotional empathy and understanding the pathos spectrum will enable you to read people and interpret social dynamics with a high degree of accuracy.

about the founder

With over two decades of experience in software engineering, I've navigated the tech industry since 1999, often as the only woman on the team. In a field shaped by and for men, I've endured and thrived, learning firsthand the complexities of human behavior in professional environments, both inspiring and disheartening. Throughout my career, I've worked for a variety of companies, each with its own culture, some fostering growth and decency, others riddled with toxicity.

Recently, my journey took an unexpected turn. I was laid off along with many others in a series of strategic moves by my former company to raise its stock price, which was a stark reminder of the ruthless nature of corporate power. Around the same time, a person close to me abruptly left a role they'd held for eight years at a prestigious and exclusive institution after enduring sexual harassment from a superior. These experiences, though painful, set me in a new, unexpected direction, which has been both frightening and invigorating.

Determined to create change, I founded Pathos X with a clear mission: to equip individuals with the tools and resources they need to protect themselves from harm. I aim to give "the many" a voice, rectifying the longstanding power imbalance between organizations and their employees, forcing a shift in how they operate. Through the tools that we provide, I seek to establish every workplace as a safe environment - free from harm.

Pathos X is born out of persistence, a desire for justice, and the belief that every person deserves to work in a nonthreatening environment. Using the power of patterns in language, AI has given us the means to reshape the landscape of power in the workplace - finally.

Together, we can rewrite the rules. Change happens one step at a time, one person at a time, and one organization at a time. Your participation is powerful. Please join us.-Anne Glaberson
